Calligramme

 GIVE YOURSELF TIME

Calligramme is something really captivating. But it got really interesting when we were asked to write a letter to ourselves 20 years from now, and then represent it as a picture using calligramme. Making of it started from a sketch and later got transformed into a calligramme. My ideas ran from clouds-stars to a butterfly going through metamorphosis. I sketched clouds-star but went further with the butterfly.

Initial sketch

Tried recreating this picture
Butterfly representing it's life cycle can truly relate me or any other person going through different stages of life. I believe that everything takes time. We need to go through the pain and sorrow to bloom completely. Also no matter what we will get a positive outcome at the end.

First outcome
I used various types of tools to give an appealing effect to my butterfly. Tools like Paintbrush and Pen tool were used to make the outline of the butterfly so that later Type on path tool can be used to add the letter(20 years from now) to the outlines. Shapes and Polygons were used to fit and inscribe text in different shapes and curves. The distortion tool was really helpful in merging the shapes and the texts, to fit them in wings of the butterfly. Each played a unique role in crafting the image and giving a compelling visual outcome.

My calligramme designs also went through different stages of shades and presentation, but finally I got what I wanted.

Final outcome

Letter to myself 20 years from now-

Hello Dhwani, Are you happy these days? Did you see the northern lights yet? Did you start going on dates? Are you still shy when you talk to boys? Did you find someone with whom you can share your deepest secrets? You always wanted to meet the love of your life; did you meet him? Did you get married to him? Does he look like one your Korean guys? Are you independent and successful just the way you wanted? What job are you doing? Are they paying you a lot? Do you still have beautiful handwriting or you are always on your computer? Your younger self was introvert and shy, but I hope that you are courageous and can speak for yourself now. You always wanted to do Animation but couldn’t speak to parents as they were excited about you being a programmer. I hope that you still have hands on animation and art. Are you still worst at taking decisions and later regret that. I hope not because it’s important to make right choices, but I hope that the choices you make is making you happy. You hated alcohol, do you like it now? Do you put on Make-up now or still go out without it? Do you still have short hair? Are you still interested in watching dramas/series/movies in eight languages. Did you get lots of tattoos all over your body just the way you wanted? Are you travelling whenever you have time? Did you visit all the states? Did you explore all the adventure sports? How’s your travel diary going? Does your Instagram look like an influencer? I hope that now you don’t get anxiety attacks and you are always confident on what you do. I hope that you and your family are doing good. Did your brother grow taller than you?  Did you start going to gym and get in shape or you’re still lazy? Did you buy your own house and the jeep that you wanted?

Let others think whatever they want to think because in this world some people are music and some are just noise, I hope you find happiness in whatever you are doing and I am extremely proud of you. I hope finally you would have stopped thinking about other’s happiness and focused on yourself. Keep going until you feel satisfied, later retire yourself and stay at a beach house.
